Willie Smith's Mid-Winter Festival will be held over two days in mid-July for the last time in 2024. Celebrating the pagan tradition of scaring evil spirits from the apple orchard and having a rollicking big party in the heart of Winter.
Willie Smith’s Tasmanian today launched ticket sales for the 2024 Mid-Winter Fest, which will be the final instalment of the marque Winter event. The festival will be held on Friday 12 July and Saturday 13 July 2024 in the Huon Valley in Southern Tasmania.
Since its inception in 2014, Willie Smith's Mid-Winter Festival has been the cornerstone of Winter celebrations in the Tasmanian OFF SEASON, bringing together locals and visitors alike.
The 2024 edition promises to be an unforgettable celebration of winter magic and pagan tradition. The core elements of the festival will return including the burning of the effigy Big Willie, Morris Dancers leading the pagan Wassail ritual, the return of fan-favourite folk-punk artists, storytelling, dancing around fires, feasting and of course hot spiced cider.
With a theme of "Reflection," the festival aims to celebrate a decade of memories, experiences, and contributions to the community.
Rachel Valentyne, Artistic Director of the Festival, expressed mixed emotions about the decision. "We are saddened by the decision to conclude the Mid-Winter Festival, but we believe the time is right to present a spectacular and memorable final event in 2024."
In a strategic move, the 2024 Mid-Winter Festival is today opening ticket sales to allow interstate travellers to plan their winter travel to Tasmania to join in this festival which is a local favourite. Tickets will be limited to 2500 per day to ensure that the festival remains the right size and that the welcoming local vibe is preserved.
"We want to welcome visitors from interstate and within Tasmania to join us to dance around the fire, celebrate the darkness, and everything that has made this festival so successful for the past decade," says Valentyne.
The full program will be announced in the new year, with transport and accommodation options also announced at this time.
The Willie Smith’s Mid-Winter Fest is supported by Events Tasmania through the Major Event Partnerships program.
