CC Thornley was the first 5 string banjoist in Australia to do an Advanced Diploma of Jazz and Contemporary music with banjo as his first instrument.
With banjo legend Pete Sommerville (Paul Kelly, Uncle Bill) they put together the curriculum for banjo students to study when learning jazz on this instrument. This had never been done before, and combines Scruggs style with modern Jazz changes.
CC started the band “the Black Swans of Trespass” to explore non-traditional uses of the instrument in popular music, and alternative country.
CC is the most versatile banjo player in the country, with a wide repertoire of traditional blues, jazz, bluegrass and non-traditional songs. He is a prolific session artist.
In 2016 CC received a scholarship to study banjo at the prestigious Hobart Conservatorium, part of the University of Tasmania.
