An industry pioneer throughout the boom in the 1920s, William was one of the many valley orchardists who grew, graded, packed and exported their fruit across the globe.

These hard-working local families created a world-wide reputation for the high quality apples that helped Tasmanian earn the title of 'Apple Isle'.

Many representations of Tasmania were expressed in the colorful Apple Crates that exported the fruit. How good are they!

In 1888, Willie Smith came to the Huon Valley, Tas

In 1888, Willie Smith came to the Huon Valley, Tasmania and planted the first tree in his orchard, the same orchard that we pick from today!

Descended from convicts (both his parents arrived in Australia free of charge), he was passionate about farming. He saw the great soil, the bountiful supply of fresh water and the clean air that the Huon Valley offered and he knew this was the place for him.

Willie’s wife, Elsie, also inspired the direction of William Smith & Son’s. She was the daughter of Charles Oates, the man who pioneered a new way of life in the Huon Valley in 1844.

The Smith family know orchards like they know apples 🍎. Through the thick and thin of the industry and a crisis or two, they have stood firm with their product. It’s a story of pioneers, determination of spirit, and most of all; family. 🙌

In 1888, a humble Tasmanian apple grower named Willie Smith planted our first trees in the soil of the Huon Valley. Four generations later we’re still here on this same family farm, in this same close-knit community, nurturing his dream.
